Contemporary : Exhumed

Danielle Arnaud, the gallerist with the eponymous space in south London, has been consistently active in bringing contemporary art to unusual places in that area, beyond the gallery in her elegant house. This is the third installment of her annual collaboration with the Museum of Garden History, which is housed in the deconsecrated church of St Mary-at-Lambeth. The grounds of the museum are home to no less than 26,000 'famous, infamous and anonymous' graves, including those of Captain William Bligh and the Slade family. Arnaud has invited around 25 artists to respond to this setting and the themes of ancestry, memory and history which it engenders. They include gallery artists such as Suky Best, David Cotterrell and Sarah Woodfine, as well as Michael Buchanan, Lisa Cheung, Phil Coy, Pascal-Michel Dubois, and Lynne Marsh, among others. Accompanying the show will be two evenings of artists' and archival film, and a publication exploring attitudes to death from different social and cultural perspectives.

Exhumed is part of the Vauxhall Festival. Now in its seventh year, this multi-disciplinary event, named after the host area, has been gaining steady momentum. Other galleries taking part include public spaces such as Gasworks and Beaconsfield.
