David Cotterrell’s sixth exhibition at Danielle Arnaud gallery showcased a selection of his recent and new works exploring the mediation of evidence. The exhibition delved into common threads of media scepticism, narrative betrayal and structural prejudice through eclectic installations created in collaboration with artists, actors and new agencies.
Amidst deep uncertainty and eroded confidence in local and global politics, Cotterrell has continued his long-term collaboration with Sri Lankan playwright Ruwanthie de Chickera. Together they’ve created a range of speculative investigations into the mediation of truth.
Mirror IV: Legacy (2018): Six young Rwandan actors, unaware of their assigned roles as children of Genocide victims or perpetrators, perform, prompting questions about memory, empathy, and intergenerational storytelling.
Reverse Images: Brexit (2019): Explored the evolving meaning of evidence through the lens of a Getty Images photo of Boris Johnson. It features over 100 articles using the same image to support diverse editorial comments, highlighting the struggle for truth in contemporary discourse.
Mirror V: Translation (2019): Explored partial translation through two Sinhala monologues, offering three distinct translations via ultrasonic speakers.
